What happens if fibroids go untreated?

Published on December 11, 2023

What happens if fibroids go untreated? The answer can be complicated, because uterine fibroids can form within or on the uterus. And, while all these growths consist of muscular tissue, they come in very different sizes. So, some growths may cause symptoms, while others may be undetectable, at least at first. So, what happens if you don't choose any treatment options? Here's what to expect, based on the classification of your fibroids.

Classifying Fibroids by Location

As we mentioned, fibroids grow to different sizes, and they develop in different locations, resulting in five group classifications:

  • Subserosal fibroids grow outside the uterus
  • Intramurals develop within the muscular uterine wall.
  • Pedunculated fibroids grow separately from the uterus, connected by a stalk-like growth
  • Submucosal fibroids form beneath the uterine cavity lining
  • Calcified fibroids form in various locations, but are hardened due to the accumulation of calcium deposits, making their removal more of a challenge.

Treating Fibroids in Georgia

The size and location of your fibroids will certainly direct your treatment choice. But you should always know that you have options, whether you choose medications to manage symptoms or surgery to remove individual growths.

Even more importantly, we want to highlight another treatment option offered at our Georgia fibroid center: Uterine Fibroid Embolization. This is a minimally invasive fibroid treatment that shrinks your tumors, without surgery or the need for an overnight hospital stay. But what happens if fibroids go untreated entirely?

What Happens if You Don't Treat Fibroids?

If you choose to delay or avoid treating your uterine fibroids, you may end up with bigger or more tumors. As a result, you may experience new or worsening symptoms, including heavy periods, pelvic pain, anemia and weight gain, just to name a few.
