Cardura for BPH: What You Need to Know

Posted on February 20, 2026

Men who have symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) have a variety of treatment options. Initially, they may seek lifestyle modifications to provide symptom relief. More advanced cases of enlarged prostate may be treated with minimally invasive Prostatic Artery Embolization, or, in some cases, surgically. But before seeking a medical procedure, many me can benefit from medications for enlarged prostate. And one of those options is Cardura for BPH. Here’s what you need to know before considering this treatment option.

Is Cardura Effective for BPH?

Cardura is the brand name for doxazosin, a medication originally intended to treat high-blood pressure but now approved for treating BPH symptoms. (When used for BPH, the pill will usually be prescribed in an extended-release form.) According to this study, the medication is highly effective for treating an enlarged prostate, reducing symptoms such as urinary retention and incontinence by as much as 39%. The study also noted that the relief could be magnified when Cardura was combined with finasteride (brand name Propecia, a medication originally intended to treat male pattern baldness.)

How Long Does it Take for Doxazosin to Work for an Enlarged Prostate?

When taking this medication, it may take as long as 2 weeks before you notice an improvement in your symptom burden. But remember, the drug won’t shrink your enlarged prostate. As such, you may need to seek further medical intervention if Cardura for BPH doesn’t provide sufficient symptom relief.

What is the Best Medication for Enlarged Prostate BPH?

There are a variety of medications used to treat an enlarged prostate, from Cialis for BPH to Cardura, Propecia, Flomax and more. Different men respond differently to the various options, depending on the size of your prostate and the current state of your overall health. As such, your healthcare provider will carefully consider which medication is best for your needs. In some cases, combination therapy including several drugs may be recommended.

When Cardura for BPH is Ineffective

When medications such as Cardura fail to provide sufficient relief from an enlarged prostate, surgery is not your only option. Here at Georgia Endovascular, we can treat BPH with PAE, a minimally invasive procedure that shrinks your prostate with a lower risk for sexual side effects.
