Hemorrhoids Symptoms

Hemorrhoids, sometimes known as piles, are enlarged and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that can cause significant discomfort and pain. They are a common condition affecting an estimated 50% of adults over 50.

Georgia Endovascular does not diagnose hemorrhoids. This page is intended to provide general information about common hemorrhoid symptoms.

External Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are found under the skin surrounding the anus. They appear as small bumps or lumps and are visible to the naked eye.

Georgia Endovascular does not treat external hemorrhoids. The information below is provided for educational purposes only.

Internal hemorrhoids symptoms might not be evident if the hemorrhoids have not prolapsed. However, if they have prolapsed – swollen to the extent that they protrude from the anus – the symptoms might include the following:

The appearance of prolapsed hemorrhoids can vary depending on the severity of the condition. The hemorrhoids may only protrude slightly in mild cases and can be pushed back into the rectum. However, prolapsed hemorrhoids may remain outside the anus in more severe cases and require manual repositioning.

Thrombosed Hemorrhoids

Thrombosed hemorrhoids are a painful condition that occurs when blood vessels in the anal tissues become swollen and develop blood clots. The symptoms of thrombosed hemorrhoids can vary but include the following:
