What are Varicose Veins?

These are twisted, bulging veins that have become visible beneath the skin’s surface. Varicose veins form when their internal valves stop working properly, allowing blood to pool and causing the noticeable bulging and color changes.  While some cases of vein disease are due to genetics, lifestyle factors can also impact your varicose vein risk. And, as it turns out, that includes the drinks you choose to consume.

3 Drinks That Impact Vascular Health

If you want to protect your health and reduce your varicose vein risk, steer clear of these 3 beverages:

  1. Sugary drinks such as soda or sweetened juices. These beverages can interfere with circulation, increasing your risk for vein disease. Plus, evidence suggests that they may actually attract more fluid into your veins, worsening existing varicose veins.

  2. Alcohol beverages, including wine and cocktails. When you consume alcohol, your heart rate increases and your red blood cell count may be reduced. In combination, these factors make it harder for your body to transport oxygenated blood out of your legs, thereby increasing your varicose vein risk.

  3. Coffee. While drinking your morning cup of Joe is less risky than consuming the previously highlighted beverages, too much caffeine can impact your vascular health. You see, caffeine causes your veins to constrict (vasoconstriction) temporarily, narrowing the vessels and impacting blood flow. Over time, and with heavy usage, this could increase your risk for varicose veins.
