Examining Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Exceptional endovascular care that delivers lasting freedom from leg pain.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of blood clots in the deep veins, usually in the legs. It is a potentially serious condition, as the clot can rupture and travel to the lungs, where it can cause serious complications.

We’re here to help. The superiority of DVT treatment offered at Georgia Endovascular comes from our advanced knowledge, collaborative approach, and state-of-the-art facilities.

We will explore the various aspects of deep vein thrombosis, including understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatment options

What causes deep vein thrombosis?

DVT is considered a dangerous medical concern that can cause life-threatening complications.

DVT usually causes blood clots in the veins in the legs, but the upper extremities can also be affected. The clots, or thrombi, can block blood flow through the vein, leading to severe symptoms.

The cause of deep vein thrombosis is not always clear, but it often occurs due to a combination of factors, including:

What are deep vein thrombosis symptoms?

One of the primary symptoms of deep vein thrombosis is swelling, particularly in the leg. This swelling can be painful and can increase over time. Another symptom is tenderness or pain around the affected vein. Some people may also experience a warm sensation in the leg.

Additional symptoms include:

Cases of DVT affecting the upper body exhibit the following symptoms:

Some patients only learn they are suffering from DVT when they have experienced a related medical event. Pulmonary embolism is a frequent DVT complication.

Treatment for deep vein thrombosis

The objective of DVT treatment is to stop the growth of blood clots, prevent the accumulation of additional clots, and minimize the risk of clots migrating to the lungs. Anticoagulant agents, or blood thinners, are commonly prescribed to achieve this.

In addition to anticoagulant therapy, compression stockings are often recommended. These specially designed stockings help to improve blood flow in the legs and reduce swelling.

In some instances, more invasive treatment options, such as angioplasty, may be necessary.
