Varicocele Embolization in Atlanta

Varicocele is a vascular disorder that approximately 15% of all men will experience at some point. The majority will discover a varicocele in their adolescence.

While varicoceles tend to form while males experience puberty, they are only recognized after symptoms develop, typically in adulthood.

Because they are largely asymptomatic, varicoceles are not considered a medical emergency.

We'll examine varicocele's risks, symptoms, treatments, and the varicocele embolization process.

What Are Varicoceles?

Varicoceles are characterized by enlarged veins in the scrotum, resulting in pain and discomfort.

Varicoceles can occur in one or both testes and usually develop due to a backup of blood in the veins. For instance, this backup of blood may be caused by a failed or blocked valve in the vein or by a shift in abdominal pressure due to a standing or sitting position.

In severe cases, varicoceles can lead to reduced sperm count and a decreased fertility.

Varicocele symptoms intensify as they develop. They include the following signs

What Is a Varicocele Embolization Procedure?

Varicocele embolization is a non-surgical technique used to treat enlarged veins in the scrotum. It involves the injection of tiny particles into the abnormal veins, causing them to clot and block blood flow.

This procedure offers several benefits and is often preferred over traditional open surgery.

What Does Varicocele Embolization Involve?

Varicocele embolization is a relatively straightforward procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis.

The technique involves a small incision in the groin area to access the femoral vein, which leads directly to the scrotum. Using image guidance, a thin wire called a catheter is guided through the vein to the varicocele. Once in place, the catheter is injected with tiny particles, called embolic materials, to block the blood flow in the abnormal veins.

This procedure carries some potential risks, although generally minor and quickly resolved. Risks might involve bleeding, infection, and an allergic reaction to embolic agents.

Additionally, there is a small risk of damage to the adjacent nerves or blood vessels. However, most of these complications are rare, and most men tolerate the procedure well.

What Results Can I Expect?

Varicocele embolization has a high success rate, with the majority of men experiencing significant improvement in their symptoms.

The procedure effectively reduces varicocele size and relieves the associated pain and swelling.

Varicocele embolization can significantly improve fertility and sperm quality, as varicoceles can contribute to male infertility.

Potential side effects of varicocele embolization are minimal and typically resolve within a few days of the procedure. Some men may experience bruising, discomfort, or numbness in the groin area, however these side effects are temporary and usually resolve independently.

It is important to note that varicocele embolization does not cure the underlying cause of varicocele. Additional treatment might be required to address the root cause.
